about

Cardinal reflects upon the ending of a relationship. While the cardinal sings in the morning, the subject of the song ponders the space in between staying in a relationship and letting go of it. At the end, the lyrics ask “where did we go”, and one is left with the sense utter loneliness that comes at the end of a romance.

lyrics

"Oh my cardinal he sings the morning
And I want to weep
For you, and for me

Oh the darkness I feel it coming
And I’ve miles to go
Lost, from my home

You can always hang on
You could always let go
It’s that space in between
Where it’s so hard to know

My back door it swings so wildly
And I want to go
But no, I want to stay

My front porch is filled with sunlight
Eyes closed so alone
Oh where, did we go?
"
